Hello Pause People!
I’m a person who likes to state to obvious sometimes…sooooo…
Menopause. What is it? You are considered to be in menopause when you have not had a period for 12 months. This can happen in your 40s or 50s. The average age is 51. However, it is often preceded by a period of up to 10 years where your periods become irregular and you experience other symptoms too. This is called perimenopause. Symptoms include vaginal dryness, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, moodiness, weight gain and slow metabolism, thinning hair and dry skin, loss of libido. Charming!
Some women are saying, “I’m too young for this group, I’m not there yet…” I wish I had been part of a group like this when I was much younger, I would have been more informed and would have recognised what was coming when I started experiencing it. Also remember that some women have a premature menopause, i.e. before 40, and others go into menopause for other reasons, e.g. chemotherapy, radiation therapy or through having a total hysterectomy.
Some women are saying, “I’m too old for this group, I’m way past that…” It is part of my dream for this group to showcase age and older women in an inspiring way. The rest of the media hide post-menopausal woman away, or portray them in a way I can’t relate to. I want to put old women left, front and centre on this page and celebrate them.
So, you are not too old or too young for The Pause! We aren’t in age silos. I want cross generational sharing and wisdom transference.
FUN FACT: Whales are the only other animals to go through a menopause…specifically the Beluga whale, Narwhals, Killer Whales and Short-finned pilot whales. We are in superb company!
